Start with the numbersPayment, cost and schedule
Your entries are planning inputs, not an offer. No personal identifiers are needed.
Illustrative arithmetic, not financial advice, eligibility or a lender offer. How the tools work
What the inputs mean
| Input | Meaning in this calculator | Do not substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | Balance on which the installment is calculated | The smaller deposit after a withheld fee |
| Annual interest rate | Fixed nominal yearly interest rate, divided into equal monthly periods | APR including charges when separately adding those same charges |
| Term in months | Number of equal monthly periods in the model | A number of weeks or biweekly payments |
| Deducted fee | A one-time origination charge withheld from principal | A financed fee or recurring subscription charge |
| Budget inputs | Your own planning amounts for the same month | Provider-verified underwriting figures |
All defaults are illustrative. They do not indicate that a lender offers the displayed rate or term.
The calculation is visible
For a nonzero rate, the modeled monthly payment is P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where P is principal, r is the annual interest rate divided by 100 and 12, and n is the number of months. At a zero rate, the unrounded payment is P ÷ n.
The schedule rounds monetary entries to cents and adjusts the last payment to settle the modeled remaining balance. Interest is calculated each period on the remaining principal. The displayed total is the sum of the scheduled payments, not a rounded payment multiplied blindly by the term.
Interest and the cost above cash received are not identical
Modeled interest equals scheduled payments minus principal. Cash received equals principal minus the deducted fee. Cost above cash received equals scheduled payments minus that cash received, so it includes the deducted fee as well as interest.
The tool does not compute a legally compliant APR. A real disclosure can include charges and timing assumptions that differ from this equal-period model. Where only APR is available, use it as a rough no-additional-fee estimate and do not claim the resulting schedule reproduces the contract. CFPB — Personal loans consumer resources
Compare scenarios in the same session
Save up to three scenarios to compare their principal, rate, term, net cash, payment and scheduled total. The comparison stays in the current browser page and is cleared when it is reloaded. The tool does not create an account or send a saved scenario to a provider.
Change one input at a time to see its effect clearly. If you change the amount, rate and term together, the result cannot be attributed to one factor alone.
Budget remainder is a planning check, not an approval model
The budget formula is entered income minus essentials, existing required payments, reserve and modeled installment. The output can be negative. It does not choose a lending limit or forecast the user’s ability to repay.
A positive result means only that the entries leave that amount. It does not account for missing bills, future changes or a lender’s separate requirements. No credit report is requested by this calculation.
Where the estimate stops
The model does not cover daily accrual, irregular first periods, balloon payments, variable interest, refinancing balances, deferred interest, financed add-ons or a provider’s early-payoff formula. Use the actual disclosure for those products.
A payment estimate is not a funding estimate. It does not determine approval, legal availability, credit-inquiry behavior or when money will arrive.
